Voter support has dropped sharply for the Labor government and the Coalition amid a fiery debate between parties over the nuclear energy question and Opposition leader Peter Dutton’s nomination of seven regional sites for nuclear plants.

Across both parties, voters who did not know whether they supported the plan made up 14 per cent of the Labor sample, compared to 10 per cent for the Coalition.

The Newspoll indicated the Coalition may have lost votes after the nuclear proposal, while support for Labor dropped overall after a sultry week for the Albanese government which involved the worsening
