The new mandatory supermarket code will lift competition which will drive down retail prices, Treasurer Jim Chalmers claims. “We’ve got to legislate these changes, but we believe by making these supermarkets more competitive in a whole bunch of ways... that we can put downward pressure on prices,” Chalmers told Seven’s Sunrise program. “We’ve empowered the ACCC and have made prices more transparent by funding the consumer group Choice, we’re making the Food and Grocery Code mandatory.
My job is to make the sector as competitive as it can be, and this is an important part of that. “If it is more competitive, more transparent and people are getting a fair go, better outcomes will be seen at the supermarket checkout.” Chalmers said the code was about the supermarkets doing “the right thing” by their customers and their grower. “It is making the Food and Grocery Code mandatory, it’s about big fines if those supermarket chains do the wrong thing.
