The general idea of using your car to power your home is not new. The underlying technology has been around for years, starting when car makers wired 110- and 240-volt outlets into cars and trucks. Later, higher output generators were added to trucks as optional accessories. But while running an extension cord into your house to power your fridge and charge your phones and tablets can work in a pinch, that isn't bi-directional, or V2H charging.

Key to how V2H works is understanding that increasingly larger and more powerful batteries are coming to electric vehicles, and how those batteries open up more possibilities for bi-directional charging. At 200 kWh, the Chevrolet Silverado EV boasts one of the largest battery packs currently available in an EV, and all of that energy is good for an EPA-estimated 450 miles of range when you’re out for a drive.
