Though Cal Fire officials have not declared it completely extinguished, a stubborn battery fire at an energy storage facility in Otay Mesa that has smoldered for more than 10 days appears to be under control. 'We're being cautiously optimistic,' Cal Fire Capt. Mike Cornette said Saturday afternoon. 'We've adjusted our staffing due to the minimal fire activity, and we're not using a whole lot of water. But we do have the ability to call more people if conditions change.
The batteries at the epicenter of the fire are in Building 3 at the Gateway facility. The building’s roof has sagged but not collapsed, Cornette said. Firefighters have not gone into the immediate area due to concerns that the batteries may reignite and release harmful gases. 'I think we're now in less of a fire situation and more of a hazardous materials-type incident,' Cornette said.
