An energy bill relief rebate worth $500 a year for 5.5 million low income households may be extended in next week’s budget, according to a briefing the federal government gave state treasurers.

But with just one week to go until budget time, the state governments have yet to be asked for a 50 per cent contribution for the scheme as per current arrangements. Since then, the Victorian Government has indicated it does not have the funds to match the rebate, sources said. Queensland, New South Wales and South Australia went 50-50 after the Treasurer announced the rebate in last year’s budget, contributing $250 a year to the $20 per household being provided by the Commonwealth.
