Readers’ letters on the gas market and its place in energy transition; the state of Victoria; the push to break up Coles and Woolworths; and the art of writing a Letter to the Editor

I am really intrigued as to how far the eastern seaboard is prepared to go before they admit that gas is required as a transition fuel to keep the lights on . Rather than blaming others for these perceived problems perhaps the gas producers could have a look in the mirror. If they had behaved ethically and ensured that the Australian market was their first priority – instead of making as much money as possible – then maybe the big-stick policies would not have been necessary.

Coal is another example. Britain has closed its coal-fired power stations and replaced them with renewable energy. So no, it hasn’t exported its emissions; it has simply reduced them. Instead, we read, they studied arts-law, sociology, English literature, history, social work, medicine, pharmacy, architecture and “a minor in acting”.There is nothing more predictable than death, taxes and the Business Council of Australia arguing against increasing minimum and award wages captures the thoughts of many of us who have contributed to Letters to the Editor in this respected masthead over countless years.

On occasion we have found ourselves on the same page, both in presence and view, as the famous and not so well known. It is this varied thought and opinion that has provided a balance to the content published in the other sections of the masthead.
