The £13.5bn rollout of smart meters - paid for through higher bills - enables usage in the home to be read remotely by energy companies.

The number of 'smart' energy meters that are not working properly stood at close to four million by the end of last year, according to new figures from the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
