Amazon is the largest buyer of renewable energy but is looking at nuclear power to serve its energy demands for its data centerAmazon Web Services , the cloud computing unit of the global tech giant, has agreed to pay $650 million for a nuclear-powered data center in Pennsylvania. The Cumulus data center was built by Talen Energy and is located adjacent to the 2.5 gigawatt Susquehanna nuclear power plant, owned and operated by the utility company.
Estimates suggest that energy demand in data centers could increase by 50 percent over the next three years due to AI adoption, thesaid in a report. Interesting Engineering has previously reported how tech giants are typing up with renewable energy, such as wind and solar power plants, to use greener energy to power their operations.
With power plans for 100 percent of its operations with renewable energy by 2025, Amazon emerged as the largest buyer of renewables after it purchased 8.8 GW of renewable energy in the past year,The Cumulus data center opened in 2023 and currently consumes 48 megawatts of power. The facility is spread around a 1,200-acre campus, and Talen had plans to grow it to a 475 MW facility.
