Nissan and Honda join forces in electric vehicle partnership to take on rivals

Nissan Motor CEO Makoto Uchida and Honda Motor CEO Toshihiro Mibe attend a joint press conference on 15 March, 2024 in Tokyo, Japan. The automakers announced their partnership on electric vehicles to compete with rival EV manufacturers such as Chinas BYD or US-based Tesla. Since the Nissan Leaf, the automaker has battled to make further inroads, along with fellow Japanese automaker, Honda.

The potential partnership could help the two develop economies of scale in producing EVs as Japan's automakers face heavy competition from China's BYD, Tesla and others. Nissan cooperates with Renault on EVs, mainly in Europe. The next Nissan electric Micra will share the same architecture as the new Renault Five and be built in the same plant in northern France.

The companies will explore cost-cutting measures, Honda's Mibe said, adding that achieving cost-effectiveness requires greater production levels.
