While the number of electric vehicle models on sale in South Africa has jumped in the past few years, many of the world’s best-reviewed options are unavailable locally.

The big luxury German brands — Audi, BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Porsche — have the widest range of models in the local market. They offer a combined 19 distinct models. Chinese automotive giants like BYD and GWM introduced their first EVs to the market in the past year, focusing heavily on affordability.However, the world’s biggest EV maker — Tesla — is still missing in action.

However, due to the relatively higher prices of EVs than their petrol and diesel equivalents, they can come with substantial additional ad valorem tax.
