By passing small electric charge, different types of materials can be bound together firmly. The attraction can be reversed with ease.

Researchers at the University of Maryland in the US have successfully demonstrated the binding of materials sticking together hard and soft materials without using tape or glue.

The researchers have previously demonstrated the effectiveness of this approach in softer materials where they built simpler structures with electro-adhesion. Interestingly, by simply reversing the polarity of the electrodes, the gel separated from the graphite electrode very easily and then adhered to the other electrode, which was now positively charged.
