A ceasefire in Gaza would only help Hamas, the White House said Tuesday, as Israel wages an air campaign against the militant group that carried out an unprecedented attack on the country earlier this month, AFP reports.
Thousands of people have been killed on both sides since Hamas militants stormed across the border on October 7, executing civilians and seizing hostages, with Israel retaliating with relentless bombardment of the Gaza Strip. “Any ceasefire will give the ability to rest, to refit, and to get ready to continue launching terrorist attacks against Israel,” said State Department spokesman Matthew Miller, addressing reporters during a daily press briefing.
He also noted that US special envoy, David Satterfield, is “intensively” working on the ground to facilitate the passage of humanitarian aid through the Rafah crossing and ensure the safe departure of US citizens and other foreign nationals.
