The natural resources, environment and climate change minister says he did so after being instructed by the prime minister.

KUALA LUMPUR: Natural resources, environment and climate change minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad says he has sent a letter to his Indonesian counterpart over the haze that is currently affecting the country.“And we have followed up on the matter,” he told reporters after officiating a conference on energy efficiency, here.

Yesterday, Anwar said he had directed Nik Nazmi to coordinate with his Indonesian counterpart in addressing the transboundary haze issue. Last month, Nik Nazmi called on Malaysian plantation companies, subsidiaries, and Malaysian-linked companies operating in Indonesia to ensure there was no open burning.

As of 5pm today, two locations in Sarawak recorded “unhealthy” Air Pollutant Index readings, according to the Air Pollutant Index Management System.On Monday, Indonesia’s environment ministry denied claims that forest fires in Sumatra and its portion of Borneo island, which have blanketed some of its cities with thick haze, had also affected the air quality in Malaysia.
