KUCHING: Sarawak is ahead of other states in Malaysia and South-East Asia as far as dealing with global climate change under the Paris Agreement 2015 is concerned.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said this is done through the state’s bold and systematic energy transition plan.

“We are the leading region in producing clean, renewable energy, where about 70% of our energy is from hydropower. “We are committed to maintaining at least 60% of our renewable energy capacity mix with hydropower,” he said when closing a two-day Malaysia Sustainable Development Goals Summit 2023: Sarawak Region yesterday, Bernama reported.

Abang Johari added hydropower offers Sarawak a sustainable renewable energy option that could reduce the carbon emission intensity of its power system by 73% between 2010 and 2021, contributing to the state’s net zero and sustainability commitments. “Leveraging on renewable hydropower has allowed us to explore green hydrogen production and utility-scale floating solar,” he said.
