Ottawa admits 'net zero' electricity will raise rates; Guilbeault slammed for 'unrealistic' fossil fuels 'phase down'

Canada already has one of the cleanest electricity grids in the world, with more than 84 per cent of electricity generated from sources like hydro, nuclear and wind. Gas-powered plants are also often used as back up for wind and solar when they aren’t producing, and several provinces that lack nuclear and ample hydro rely heavily on fossil fuels, including gas and coal, for baseload electricity generation.

“Shifting to clean electricity saves households on their energy bills away from the shocks of yo-yoing gas and oil prices,” said Guilbeault.Jamie Sarkonak: Expect to pay for Steven Guilbeault's secret environmental rights plan “We understand, we’re not there yet, which is why we’ve decided to ensure that the regulations wouldn’t apply to them now,” he said.

“We estimate that if provinces, territories and Indigenous partners take full advantage of these measures, the federal government will offset more than half of provinces and territories’ cost of cleaning the grid,” he said. Alberta Environment Minister Rebecca Schulz blasted the federal government for putting “ideology before common sense, affordability and reliability”, and said “they will not be implemented in our province, period”.

“By regulating these changes in the decision-making now, you can ensure polluting power plants can beover 20 years, while allowing them to run where they have the greatest value for keeping electricity affordable and reliable,” Guilbeault said.A document provided by the government says only that “contravention of applicable rules be punishable by appropriate penalties, such as increased fines and jail time.

Canada Aims to Transition to Non-Carbon-Emitting Power SourcesThe Canadian government has unveiled draft regulations to transition the majority of the country's power grid to non-carbon-emitting sources. With already one of the cleanest electricity grids in the world, Canada aims to meet increasing demand while reducing dependency on fossil fuels. The move is expected to result in a slight increase in household energy bills, but savings from reduced fossil fuel usage, such as recharging electric vehicles, are projected to offset the increase.

Canada Introduces New Rules to Transition to Renewable EnergyThe Canadian government has introduced new rules aimed at ensuring that non-emitting power becomes the backbone of the country's transition to a low-carbon economy. The rules prioritize flexibility, allowing the continued use of fossil fuels during times of high consumer demand and grandfathering existing gas-fueled power plants. However, the proposed regulations have faced opposition, with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith calling them unconstitutional and irresponsible.
