Companies said they will partner on the building and deployment of hydrogen locomotive conversion kits for diesel electric locomotives

is continuing to push ahead with efforts to develop hydrogen power as an alternative fuel source for the railway industry.

The move builds on CPKC’s previous hydrogen program, which began in 2020 when the company – then CP Rail – announced it would develop North America’s first line-haul hydrogen-powered locomotive. North America’s railway fleet is currently nearly entirely powered by diesel locomotives, which are the industry’s most significant source of greenhouse gas emissions.

In Canada, railways have the added incentive of the federal price on carbon, which is set to rise in the coming years and make diesel more expensive.
