power grid. This grid, which manages the flow of power to over 26 million Texans, is separate from the two national power grids, meaning Texas cannot access power from other states. Usually, this is not a problem. However, as temperatures rise and Texans crank up their air conditioning units, the demand for energy rises.

The days-long blackouts in Texas during the deadly February 2021 winter storm occurred because the Texas power grid was overloaded. In response to lingering concerns about the 2021 blackout, as well as high temperature forecasts, ERCOT issued a “weather watch” that ends at 8 p.m. today. The weather watch indicates a higher-than-expected demand on Texas’ power infrastructure.
