Bidirectional charging is gaining popularity on electric vehicles. Unfortunately, none of them are available in South Africa yet.

There are at least 15 electric vehicles on the market internationally that can provide backup power to homes or several appliances during electricity outages.

Several vehicle manufacturers now make fully-electric cars or hybrids that support one of the abovementioned types of bidirectional charging, effectively allowing you to use them as a portable battery pack. However, each individual outlet is limited to 2.4kW, so don’t expect to run a washing machine or standard electric stove.

On the opposite end of the spectrum in terms of capacity was the Nissan Leaf, with a relatively modest 39kWh pack.

Probably if you own a million-Rand-plus vehicle, you're probably already sorted for loadshedding blackouts. Dumbest. Article. Ever. (Most electric cars sold here cost between R1 - R2 MILLION. Very few of those allow reverse power supply)

Aint gonna work m8

they also need twice as much copper and a bunch of other minerals, so besides being very expensive for the average joe, they are really not that 'green' after all

In today's episode of spectularly useless information for South Africans...

I do want an F150 lightning but it will probably cost 6 million zar once landed in ZA

What a joke... See your life chrisyelland And then what happens when the time comes for us to use our cars and we're all charging at once? More loadshedding. This renewables crap is just a joke.

Have you heard the joke about 90% of electric cars are still on the road. The other 10% somehow miraculously made it home? Well this fantasy of bi-directional charging is another joke.

Only tesla can save eskom 😄

No, 90% of the countries working adult population would not be able to afford an electric car for the infrastructure to be viable, and I cant see this changing anytime in the near future. cost of living is extremely high vs average salary

Can’t get to work the next day because I used the battery power for a hot shower🤣
