Oil giant to shed 350 UK onshore jobs, blaming windfall tax

The UK's largest oil and gas producer has told staff it expects to shed 350 UK onshore jobs, blaming the UK government's windfall tax.

Harbour Energy has been carrying out a review of its operations since January, after warning that it was re-assessing its future activity in the UK.A statement from the company said it was working hard to mitigate the impact of the workforce reduction.

"We are working hard to mitigate the impact of this reduction, by for example, a recruitment freeze and opening a voluntary redundancy scheme. These figures do not include UK-based corporate and international roles, which are still being reviewed. "Nor do they include our offshore organisation, where we expect the impact to be significantly lower. We are very conscious of the impact of this news on our people, and we are carrying out the review fairly and with consideration for everyone who is affected."Energy firm profits have soared recently, initially due to rising demand after Covid restrictions were lifted, and then because Russia's invasion of Ukraine raised energy prices.

The levy applies to profits made from extracting UK oil and gas, but not from other activities - such as refining oil and selling petrol and diesel on forecourts.

Bull shit just corporate greed from oil companies and their Tory slaves

😂

When the government looses the plot! Hit back and renationalise North Sea oil!

I'm going to call bullshit on this story I'm afraid bbc

After the Billions they made so they make people redundant really?..

Taxes are taken AFTER profits, which includes all costs. This is just bitterness by energy companies.

The result of Labour MP RichardBurgon strategy.

This is BS, the oil companies as making billions more money after all taxes than would have budgeted, and they would have staffed to that budget.

Why not cut the senior managers pay and bonuses first

Nonsense

This is madness. You know who's going to pay in the end.

It's just an excuse. It would have been something that had been in discussion, and the tax is the final push or good cover to blame someone else.

It's a bullet we've got to bite, if we want a future ? 🧐🤠🙏

Billionaire company...greed at its highest level

Shed jobs because they earned bumper profits? What would happen if they made a lose 🤔

Imagine blaming others for your own f up.

C_Hodges1

Ok…

That picture is offshore though!

Of course they do. Greedy incompetent businesses usually blame others for their failures.

Most people on this thread are completly clueless about basic dynamics in economics.

Sooo, because you are greedy and being taxed more as punishment, you're going to take it out on your employees, is that about right?

So…theyve found a scapegoat to blame for some structural changes they were going to make anyway.

Bollocks, record profits made in the 1st few months this year

It's an obvious outcome from any business that gets a windfall tax. Its their get of jail card (excuse to hire a cheaper workforce)

This was always going to happen, should’ve just stopped giving them extra money as an incentive…

In reality this smacks of simply maintaining the level of dividends …

I smell bullsh1t.

But they’ve made billions of extra profits.

Shame on you gaslighting for the Tories shame on you for lying

It’s called greed!!

so in reality, shed jobs- reducing production - keeping prices high - increasing profits further

CommunityNotes - can the BBC be your next state affiliated media focus?

Lies.

So instead of telling shareholders to take a cut this year they throw 350 people on the scrapheap. Most businesses in this country are greedy grasping bastards.

Theatrics. Show their profit, then the jobs they cut!

So who pays for these foolish taxes that are politically, not financially, motivated

This needs financial interrogation, 350 jobs loss to tax… hmmm

Ya right ok! maximum profit first Greed

Keep taxing, it creates a brain drain and attracts scroungers.

There isn’t any!!! We didn’t get any!! They kept all the profit!!

How many ways can I.... treat the public as fools that I can spoon feed this constant shoite to..... let me count the ways

Renationalise

So why you can to pay higher dividends and bonuses to Fat Kats.

Even with a 75% tax rate on $2.5bn, that’s still $625m in profits. And they post $8m of it and play the victim. Crooks.

Bullcrap, stomping their feet at windfall tax. They make billions.

Increase the tax

Lies lies bloody lies. Not the BBC they're just reporting it. Harbour Energy must think we are all stupid.

See labour

Frédéric Bastiat “When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men in a society, over the course of time they create for themselves a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it.”

Emotional blackmail by a sector whose top bosses lack the right emotional qualifications to be in positions of such great responsibility.

Oil company shitting on the worker what a surprise

Absolute jokers

Ofcourse shareholders matter more than employees !! Just a ploy to soften the govt's stance on windfall tax

tashka908070 What a load of bollocks
