Pensioner living alone says ‘no one seems to be able to explain the huge increase’ in her electricity bills

Marie Prendergast, from Co Tipperary, said her bill for a 43 day period came to €765.

“I am a carer with two children with special needs and I simply cannot afford to pay it. It’s scandalous nothing is done to lower these obscene prices,” she said. She also asked Electric Ireland for advice over the phone and was offered a 10 per cent reduction if she entered a new 12 month contract. The woman wondered “how someone on just over €200 is meant to afford this on top of rent and bins and so on”.

Ms O’Callaghan had been monitoring her smart meter since she received her last bill, and on days when she was not home, it was “showing usage of 16 units per day – more than the average family usage”. “No one seems to be able to explain the huge increase. Most of my friends have found that they are in credit because of Government subsidies,” she said.

Well, what a surprise. Shut down the economies of the world for best part of a year and a half…and expect all to return to normal 🙄

A lot of moaners out there surely they should be happy to contribute to increased profits and bonuses for the chief executives of these utility companies

The cost of living crisis is meant to be permanent. It's nudge politics to acclimatize people to a Net Zero future in which cheap energy is a thing of the past.

Flyck66 Thank sanctions on Russia and your WEF lackies in parliament

Don't worry, all those smart meters installed will magically reduce energy bills

The sad reality is that people deserve as much of this as they are willing to take or put up with.

There have been a number of increases in electricity prices last year, But if you take this into consideration & compare bills from this year & last, the larger bills this year seem to be higher than the percentages of increase, and people are using less energy, what's going on?

People don't look into their bills, you should in detail. An investigation is needed. Energy companies are massively profiteering, They use world events /inflation that have some effect on costs as a cover to increase profits And explain this theft away with crafted PR speeches.

If you support sanctions, billions being handed out to ngos and open borders (which cost billions more), you've no ground to stand on.
