Lexus is working on a manual transmission for electric cars, but this is more ‘virtual combustion powertrain’ than just a fake gear stick…

– it can all be recreated through the virtual transmission, precise torque mapping and sound generators.

The system will be integrated with Lexus’s DIRECT4 twin-motor, which so long as its peak outputs are higher than any chosen combustion engine it’s trying to mimic, will be able to recreate it. It’ll also theoretically be able to switch between front, rear and all-wheel drive, and with the right torque-vectoring hardware could even mimic the actions of an RC-F-style torque-vectoring differential.

Lexus has already built a working prototype based on the electric Lexus UX300e crossover, to which it has mapped in the engine and transmission feel of a petrol engine. It even fitted a prototype rev-counter. The sound being created from this sort of system is bound to only get better too, as other factors like vibrations through the cabin could be recreated by motors in the seats.

In reality, most of the technology to facilitate this type of virtual performance car experience is already available, it’s just a case of putting it all together. Of course, there is a mountain of data capturing and calibration work still to complete, but this type of development opens up all sorts of possibilities for future applications.

What’s the benefit?

Not getting the vibe you would with a true manual car, think it’s so obvious fake as gears change, engine feedback and sound not in line with driver changing through the gears. NothingLikeTheRealThing sorry.

after looking through all the replies, i can safely assume nobody on twitter has ever driven a manual and taken a corner. can’t wait for manual EVs

Absolutely fascinating how much time and money people are ready to waste, just to spare some effort of using their mind in order to develop themselves 😄

Sweet.. even though there is the sound of I C E

Smart move, yes people have difficulties with changes but if this helps the EV makers to dig into the pool of Manual drivers then that's smart. Some people just like driving with a stick even when they know automatics are better they just prefer the stick.

While they are at it why don’t they also include fake exhaust noises and fake exhaust fumes

What an absolute farce. Utterly pointless. Whoever agreed to fund this clown project should be immediately fired Lexus

If you find yourself in a hole and cannot get out. DONT polish the sides. Toyota, polishing the sides for all it is worth, instead of building a ladder.

Silly

and the cost will be automatic.....

C'est débile.

Why? Totally stupid

Geef mij maar het Pientere Pookje van Daf. Zit in de Prius.

AukeHoekstra is it April 1st already?

'is this the future?' lol no it's a coping mechanism.

AukeHoekstra I never like automatic cars, you can't control the torq vs speed if you want it. Just try to make a burn out with a automatic gearbox.

whilst i prefer manual over auto, this is pretty damn dumb for an electric car. I am sure this R&D will add unnecessary £££ to the cost of their cars!

What is the point of this

No, PolestarCars is!

Maybe better to not simulate gears but say change in power level from low-med-high? This could be fun for drivers who want more power in specific timing, say on a track!

Any electrical vehicle is a NO NO in South Africa. Load shedding? Your vehicle will stand still more than it can drive. No electricity here in South Africa. We are now between stages 5 and 6 load shedding. Off three times per day. Sometimes 4hrs at a time. Pathetic government.

This leaves me with just one question: Why?

Is there a simulated clutch pedal

Genius

Well

This is just sad. Everyone that drives stock is looking at this like, 'just burn it...burn it to the ground.' I, myself, have the kerosene in hand...who has a match?

It completely defies the purpose of electric cars

Dumbest thing I've seen in ages. Boomers need to accept change.

Why. notaquestion

So fake

What is the point of this

people in the comments who are complaining about how useless this is are not the fucking target demographic. this only exists because as EVs become the norm, car enthusiasts will be left without their glorious stick shifts. lexus is trying its best to keep car enthusiasts happy

Ok

Why on earth would you want a flipping gear and all that noise? For peetsake grow up move with the times

🤡🤡

Why not also a gas tank, which you can fill with expensive gasoline which the car then gradually consumes? I mean, you gotta make these more realistic!! 🤡

...why?

Just why?

Se oye el motor. Y se ve el taxímetro de revoluciones. Seguro que es eléctrico?

Robs_nn

It’s simulated tho. Nothing will beat the real deal

Sure thing, boomer.

A manuel has nothing to do with car safety. Actually these fake safety features like Lane keeping self-driving and ect. are making the roads far more dangerous than a MT. With a MT one only needs ABS to make the car completely safe. By eliminating everything else that's a savings

The only difference is your car an appliance or is it a thrill. I hate the fact that my current car is an automatic and was not offered in manual. Also if we switch to EVs where's the power coming from we don't produce enough electricity to charge them. Gas is far greener than EV

Let’s go!!!!

As stupid as Samsung's Physical keyboard that stuck over touchscreen for typing.

Does it alter the efficiency though? Is an electric motor more efficient at certain rpms?

Hey wait a minute , hot of press I have found video of a similar Lexus motorcycle!

This is truly halarious 😂 are you sure this wasn’t posted on April 1st. Perhaps we need to install a pretend exhaust pipe, a vibration system in front, and a little device to drip oil stains on driveways. 😂 This is most daft thing I’ve read today.

this is pointless. lexus is the new nokia.

Well, some EVs do have motor sounds playing through speakers so I guess this isn't that different in the end.

What is the point of this 😕

like the sound of that 'electric' engine. throaty as it climbs the rev range.

This is DUMB! 🤡

The future of a driver’s car is autonomous, not manual.

The quietness scares me 😁, I still like the real sound of engine.

What about the engine sounds? are they real or fake?

That's so ridiculous in so many ways ... Does Toyota have full BEV vehicles already? Maybe they are barking at the wrong tree...

meanwhile... lose the steering wheel too

Cl thought this was a sick idea but It just feels wrong and weird. I was waiting for that engine sound after each shift 😭😭

Useless.

Literally the dumbest thing I've seen this year. We have self driving cars now that require next to no input, you can literally just sit there and roll joints the whole ride. Unless it's a game, input is bad.

This is the dumbest most unnecessary thing ive ever seen.

Why?

This makes no sense to an electric drivetrain. Lexus need to hang the towel on this.

WTF

Don't listen to the white wing racists, this is an awesome idea

This is the future

I love manuals, but this is just straight up stupid. And if it's an electric car prototype, why the hell am I hearing 4 cylinder engine noises?

And if they screw it up does the electric car make grinding noises and slow down?

Electric drivetrains don't need a transmission. That's just another piece to break

What a dumb idea

Toyota (Lexus) is an ideal example of poor capital allocation. This is literally flushing R&D dollars down the drain.

this is just useless

This is what you do when your EV tech sucks and you’re trying hard to be different 😂

I am probably going to get attack by this but this manual thing is for enthusiast who love manuals.

Laughing stock of the auto industry 🤣. What a waste of time & money.

Tojota

Why

😂

Id rather have no gears

so..... fake clutch too?

Is it like fake and just for idiots makes noises and shit?

This is not the same

Most useless technology to be able to implemented in an EV

With a clutch? Can you switch into automatic? Seems kind of backwards.

Good lord no! Wow legacy auto trying everything to get you to buy one. Only Tesla!!!!

Lol. I learned to drive with a standard transmission.....in 1997.

Imagine if we designed the first cars to make horse noises and respond to whipping

jajaja🤦

Huzzah! While electrical cars aren’t very practical for most people, more manual hybrids would be great.

😂

What an incredibly stupid idea.

😂 Holy shit!

.Lexus I hate to say it but you guys fully deserve what is coming for you in the market.

I would love to drive this.

😬😬😬

Will it come with fake engine noise and diesel smell too?

Oh darn focus groups...

This is dumb.

zoso altfel se simte electrica acum.

This is very stupid

This is a joke, right?

Maybe Lexus could add a fake silencer with dripping water, just like the 'real' thing?

That is like developing hydrogen cars. Stupid

Hilarious. Just imagine if manual gears had never been a thing, and that it was EVs that necessitated them. 100% without doubt the petrol heads would be desperately trying to reproduce the no-gear, constant acceleration / torque of their ICE cars.

I enjoy driving manual but this is 🚮. You drive manual to hear the engine and turbo spool. Fire the person who thought of this and trash the idea.

🤣😂🤣 Vroom-vroom and farting sounds too or I'll spend my money elsewhere...

Why the hell would anyone want this on an electric car?

I'm confused!!!

Eh not bad. If the Hyundai N vision 74 came with one of those it’d be an insta buy for me.

This is so stupid to no avail

Just because the boss likes car racing?

More kids should drive standards! Can't be on the phone until you get really good at shifting and steering with your knee!

most people drive manual in some european countries

if it doesnt have clutch then this makes little sense. manual is all about the extra control.

🤦🏻‍♂️ 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ SERIOUSLY? Lexus ?

April fools?

karbonio Непонел :/

yall fr some hatin ass mfs

Ok…but why put the sound of a locking-unlocking seatbelt on it?

Toyota, best part is no part,,.

They need to lay off the bong pipe. Made so much profits they think they’re the shit.

This is dumb

Gimmick

It’s the future of Lexus going bust.

Stupidly has a name: Lexus Utterly ridiculous to even mention this as an actual thought. They say “the competition is coming.” 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 “The best part is no part. The best process is no process. It weighs nothing. Costs nothing. Can’t go wrong.” - Elon Musk

99% of people will never want this. One of the best parts of having an EV is not having to do this nonsense.

I want a manual window knob to roll down the windows too.

This is cool and all but why

This is stupid for so many reasons. Gimmicky, fake pointless. Who is this for anyway? Even if you can simulate your shifts really well , why? EV makers are already bumping engine sound through speakers, so I guess there’s a market?

A gearbox while not necessary in electric cars can still improve performance and range. However if this is simulated gears then it will just make the car a lot slower.

Completly worthless 🤦

Fake car sounds are agony. This is just another nail in our enthusiast coffin. Cars will just be bubbles that autonomously ferry groups of strangers around playing sound effects at everyone. It's over lads. Glad we got to enjoy it together.

If we’re going to be forced to drive EVs at least we can have a little fun 🥲

😂😂😂

Elle est pas du tout électrique la voiture

Isn't a manual transmission in an electric vehicle pointless?

This has got to be a meme 🤣

Couldn't they just program in torque changes with the paddle to jolt the car for you and play sound in the speakers?

A lot of haters in the replies lmao

Nah leave manual shifting out of evs. That is straight disrespectful.

Loving the every bit of it ❤️

So is it just a fake transmission hooked up to a computer to mimic gear shifts?

WHY

Why not add a hand crank for starting up the thing while at it 🤣

Adding unnecessary complexity, weight and expense doesn't seem like such a good idea.

Who the heck needs that

Arthurkola RafaelGaertner2

Why?

🤮🤮🤮

Я 1 чую роботу двигуна внутрішнього згорання щось я не зустрічав в електричних автомобілів звук роботи двигуна настільки реальним ви хочете сказати що це звучання з динаміків аудіосистема?

This is one of the dumbest things ever. Make your car slower so that it 'feels' like you are shifting.

people who only wants to go from A to B will always prefer automatic or no gearbox, but it can be interesting for future sportscars

CRKDBloodLine

Solving a problem that doesn't exist

This is dumb

Does it come with simulated clutch and gearbox failures.. so you can get to pay to get it fixed .. for that old fashioned 'ICE' car feel?

Sound like a there’s a engine in there tbh

Omg!!! That would be great. Hope it isn’t just in the UK.

Yet another reason to not buy a Lexus. Well done.

LOL. This is a joke. Yes?

Patético

It's fine if it makes the car faster or provides longer range. If not, it's just a silly thing for pretenders.

Well, if they drive on the right side of the road then it will the greatest improvement

Weo-we-wow 😳

I had to look this up to check it wasn't a spoof, and it appears to be genuine. I'm certain development costs might have been reduced had they teamed up with Playkidz.

Be putting fuel in it next and removing batteries to save weight 😏

What the point?

Tell me you’re wasting money without telling me you’re wasting money🫥

I would add CVT transmission instead manual.

Is this a fake?

does this just put a speed limiter on every 'gear' youre on?

Shame on you Lexus just put a real engine (ICE obviously) inside

How stupid. Once you drive an automatic vehicle, you never want to be messing around with clutch pedals & gear sticks anymore

Why does it sound like a ICE car?

boomers would love it

Fake

We already have EVs with manual shifting. It’s when you turn on manual shifting in a video game.

But no noise😢😢

Why?!

Waste of development money 😐

Rather than physically fitting a mechanical manual transmission to the back-end of an electric motor, this technology uses an unconnected gear stick and clutch pedal that use haptic drivers to generate ‘feel’ no dramas it’s a preference for making EVs more engaging to drive

Cool but it’s not the same

Is there a reason to do this? ICE engines have transmission to provide variable torque because of their inherent limited range torque curve. This is not a problem for electric engines.

🤦 bekloppter wird es heute nicht mehr.

Electric cars definitely need more things that can break...🤡

If you ever asked how could a company be a boomer, ladies and gentlemen, here's Toyota for you.

Where is the brrmm brrmm noise?

This is like adding physical keyboard on touch screen phone. You don't need it, but you are used to it, so it is there.

No

Is this an electric engine sound?😂 0:11s

What is making the revving noise?

AukeHoekstra Somehow, this feels a bit like adding a dashcam based sextant feature, so I can navigate my car to my destination. 🤷‍♂️

Oh yes... some hope to keep the *feel* of a car (especially sports cars) good on you Lexus - Plus your new prototype looks incredible 😍

ehhh why, when it's not needed?

real crap

Can they add really cool engine noises too?

This is a joke, right?

I don't like manuals

A manual to shift gears in a car with no gearbox… yeah.

Why?

I can’t let that sink in!

Why?

For what….

Nope don't need it

I actually see some engineering aspects to this that make sense. Requires a motor with less torque, inverter that requires less operating frequency and don’t need a motor that runs to 5000 rpm. Plus you get all the car enthusiasts that don’t want to let go of the manual trans.

WHY!?

Nah

When the ignition lever disappeared from steering wheels, did traditionalists moan about that too? This is beyond ridiculous. I thought artificial engine sounds were peak stupidity in EV design. I was wrong.

Can you make me one with clutch slipping? I’d like to feel home.

Just why though? Even gas cars are automatic. Why are they trying to put manual transmission in an electric car!?

after manual transmission please add manual hand crank start next.

... no.

This is the equivalent to samsung making a new phone with a physical keyboard to compete with the Iphone

This is some dumb sh..

Why, why - and why?

This is so unnecessary.

I'd buy one.

This is absolutely brilliant. It brings a whole new dimension to my driving choices. Just think, I could own this EV and the wife would NEVER drive it!

twitters great

Hell yeah. Electric Tōge here we come.

Toyota only gets to make so many mistakes before they don’t have the money to continue.

Why?

Hey, while you're at it, can I get a radio dial on my spotify?

Sound so much similar to blackberry reinventing mobile keyboards 🤣

Tell them to fix that shitty interior first

If this sounds weird/stupid to you, then it's probably not targeted for you. Manuals are fun and engaging. I'm glad that at least they're trying to make EVs more fun, but still I'm not sure a faux manual with fake engine noise is the way😑. I hope synthetic fuels succeed.

Toyota 'Let me just add this extra action that makes the driver have to do more work, and adds no benefit...'

Fake. There are no projects working on actually implementing this.

It’s evolving, just backwards

Pra ficar completo tem que poder estancar o carro também

Wait does it come with a fake sound too 🙄🤮.

It's not a manual transmission but a fake virtual transmission? Why? 🤔

NGL i'd buy this

One question: Why?

Too much money and power often leads to bad decisions, this being an example of it.

Fake manual transmission is fun 😂😂🤣🤣

Haha! How stupid!

I love manual cars, but come on… that’s a bit much 😂

This can make any sense if there are only two speeds. Like up to 40 mph and over 40 mph. And they shouldn't be manual.

Does it need actual gears? Seems to me you could fake it with that stick shift that doesn't control a transmission, rather it alters the accelerator pedal input. Plus of course add V12 sounds via speakers.

Would feel soooo much better

This is terrible lol

This is amazing. Love that they are doing this. Long live manuals.

No, not the future of... anything. A fun curiosity, perhaps.

This is silly

Is Lexus high? Lol 😆 make a single gear ev work first before you run 🏃‍♂️

Why? If you are worried about efficiency then you need engineering, not gearing down.

What is the point? Ridiculous. They have a horse whip in the trunk for good measure?

My buddy did that a few years ago. He converted a Subaru 360 to electric and manual

Can’t replace the soul

'this is so stupid why would they-' shut up. I want this.

If you grind the e-clutch, will the car make the death buzz sound from Operation?

They even made fake down-shift sound. 🤦‍♀️

Why This is stupid and counter productive

Just an optional line up among all they have. Hobby one.

There it is, the dumbest thing I have read this week. fail Lexus dumb

I mean. Why?

DMODeejay I can see you shifting in an electric car DMO style

Toyota/Lexus designers are toying with the idea of electric powered catalytic converters just in time for their 2024 EV truck lineup. Here’s a first look at their prototype. Is this the future of EV trucks?

Brmmm brmmm! Why?

stupid and pointless

Fuck everybody hating on this. It’s cool

Do you need this because you drive on the left side of the road? 😉

This is so dumb

Oh no they put the steering on the Pedo aka British side

Love driving a standard transmission in an ICE. There’s something about the experience actively controlling the vehicle and being “part of it”. That said, one-pedal driving, with zero gear changes, a flat torque curve, and instant acceleration in an EV is 💯 better. Silly Lexus

Look, I love manual cars, my jeep is manual. But WTF is this clown show 🤣. This defeats one of the main purposes people are attracted to EV’s… Efficiency

Total nonsense.

Adding complexity. Let’s face it, those Lexus Service Centers aren’t going to pay for themselves.

So Toyota wants to make their EV slower, jerk the passengers when shifting, run away when in neutral, and clutch replacement every 40-50K miles?

Seems like a fun car for people with too many cars.

This looks like a step backward

Toyota locked in the past.......

No...

bet it breaks

imAustinFeldman running out of excuses 😂😂

Legacy automakers have such poor products they have to resort to this… Tesla already selling millions of cars, Ford sold out its electric cars, and Toyota thinks this is what’s needed to sell cars 🙆🏼‍♂️🙅🏼‍♂️

This is like putting a steering wheel in front of your toddlers car seat and telling them they are driving the car. There's no gear to change

Yet another reason to never buy one 😂😂😂

It's like an iPhone if you put a keyboard in it. Just why?

今天还有人干这种脱裤子放屁的事情?上海手动变速箱工厂前些时间都关闭了。

It’s a joke? Jajajaa zero fillings

For everyone asking why a manual EV. Y’all just don’t understand the fun of a manual transmission.

This looks really fun in a goofy way, maybe it’ll get a few people to buy an electric car who wouldn’t have otherwise? Personally not appealing to me though.

current limits by speed selection?

Stupidest idea every .. Toyota was such a leader with the Prius. Now they are just lost fail Toyota

Why‘d anybody want that? 😅

No

Need more excitement. This is quite dull.

As a driver who loves the FEEL of driving manual and loves the FEEL of a smooth quiet electric car i understand the creation of this. From a technical perspective it makes no sense, but this is a combination of two unique experiences not an innovation of any sort.

LOL

🤡 stevenmarkryan

Is that sensible

But why?

The next 'feature' would be shoveling coal into small furnace, and an exhaust that leaves manure on the street... 😆

coal-powered cars with nickel/lithium storage are idiotic, what an absolute farce

I don't know everything but everything I know says this is hilariously useless.

I think it could use more buttons on the steering wheel. How about a whole calculator?

Why?

What’s the point?

Save the manuals!

Why would anybody even want this lol

My Tesla’s so fast, no time to shift! Both hands on wheel 🛞 Tesla

I want a sight. And, a button to push, that makes shooting sounds. Then, pours me a beer if I hit something.

Why Backward!

what’s that loud clicking sound

Want to make engaging cars? Make them lighter. Ask Mazda.

This is stupid

Hahahahahahaha “innovation” Do they honestly think that this is some Giga brain idea that will win them back market share. Literally going in the opposite direction of autonomy. Next iteration will be a manual transmission mated with an internal combustion engine for “sound”.

This makes zero sense. Multiple gears are needed in Internal Combustion Engines because the optimal torque is delivered in a very narrow RPM range. In electric motors, optimal torque has a much wider range. Usually just a single gear ratio is enough.

🤮

They can’t be serious

Toyota also developing a smoke generator to their EVs.

Toyota does what they always did, exploring different alternatives, 90% of them they discard or shelf, but during that exploration they learn things others don’t. Classic Toyota, others still didn’t figured out that you learn by trying a lot of alternatives, it’s a concept.

Dumbest thing ever invented by mankind

Why They cannot developt the proper software to do all the shifting.

😆😳👀😠🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤢

Probably one of the worst ideas I’ve ever seen.🤦‍♂️

Awesome. Shifting a manual transmission really adds to the joy of driving. great work!

That's right up there with Dodge making phony exhaust noise.

Looks tideous and annoying lol… but hey “ I have to be able to change gears when I want”… 😂😂🤣🤣🤣

“We’d like to keep selling clutch replacements”

Indians drive manual. Don't understand where it's an upgrade or downgrade.

Uhuh. Can you downshift to the point where you don’t even have to touch the brakes to stop? I was so good at my transmission I could get off the freeway without tapping my brakes

Does it also play circus music?

Some things a pointless and should not exist 🤷🏾‍♂️

🤔

That is dumb

No, why hell would you do that? Should we also mount cars on legs and make them walk so they are more like horses?

Why can I smell this video?

I love my manual transmission and have driven it my whole driving life. But even I have left it behind when I bought a Tesla. Lexus: you are embarrassing yourself. People just don't care about this. 8% manual sales in 2021.

More shit that can break. No thanks. DOA. The best part is no part

That seems silly. Enthusiasts contribute almost nothing to pollution: if 95% of the world went electric, the car guys should be allowed to keep the loud and rough v8’s with manuals 😅

Lexus must have a monopoly on shifter knobs… what is happening?

🤡 - can you include an oil tub in the frunk with a dipstick too please.

So it's a normal single speed EV drive. But they cap and manage the torque so they can make it feel like a manual ICE through the fake gearstick and clutch? So multiple layers of fake, and it performs worse as a result.

More knobs. Well done!

why do you need that? an EV has two gears ffs 🤦‍♂️

Why? 😵

Why?

Oh yeah let's complicate something that was already made easier, that makes total sense, not

Literally unsolving a problem.

I found a picture of Toyotas version!

about as dumb as putting engine noise through speakers

Toyota ist Absurdistan....Toyota wird damit den eigenen Niedergang noch beschleunigen

Well in this I have to disagree a car that's both automatic and if you like drive stick, it is I sign up for that flippers are not the same, but I sometimes I just want to play the fast and the furious in a legal way if you know what I mean.

😂

Look how I'm driving my invisible manual transmission

No.

“The driver’s car” 🤷🏻‍♂️ Humans in general (but ToyotaUK & LexusUK in particular) do have an incredible knack of wasting time and money… 🤦🏻‍♂️ Hang on - it is it April 1st already?! 😆

🤦‍♂️

Jesus. This is like a Smartphone with Physical Buttons.

Its to give something to all electric wankers to play with when they leave home.

In the name of it, Lexus is inteoducing complexity and giving a path to stealerships to steal money from consumers, while tesla is doing everything to simplify it to save consumers time and money! Crooks

Why? I hate manual.

Uhhh, guys? It’s not even 2023 yet. It’s a bit early for April fools jokes…

This is like wanting your ford model T to make a clippy clop sound while moving. Idiotic

Laughable

This is so stupid. But as expected from legacy ICE

Duh, the steering wheel's on the wrong side, not very good engineering

Useless.🤡

Quite possible if this can increase efficiency and Power for smal EVs

Man muss nicht alles verstehen

😂😂😂😂 somebody needs to fire management. Forget EV for a minute, the trend for transmission is clearly towards automatic.

This is like putting a rotary dial on a smart phone.

But that to me still sounds like a gasoline engine. Lol

Like nicotine patches eh ? 🤣 In the end there are only 3 possibilities: - the real Cherokee style - stop completely - furthermore fill the wallets of shady exploiters of your own addiction

Back to the future.

👎👎👎👎What a stupid idea!!!👎👎👎👎 A manual gearbox only makes the car slower and also less efficient, due to the increase in weight, the losses during gear changes. A technical step backwards and should be avoided.👎👎👎👎

Yeah this isn’t going to amount to much.

what about put two horses in front of the car? To give more power?

elonmusk WTF is this?

What a waste of R&D smh...

This is so pointless

The people: Electric cars are run smoothly and are easy to drive! Toyota / Lexus: We can fix that!

No its not

Excellent. I hope it has a proper clutch too

But WHY ?

They don’t offer a manual on their ICE cars. Why change now?

Tesla Plaid drivetrain is one gear. With enough torque for ridiculously fast acceleration and top speed. Gearbox like this and that of the Porsche Taycan are soon to be obsolete as legacy manufacturers learn how to make effective and efficient EV drivetrains.

Ah that’s a lot of work. 😂🤣

Bankwupt 😂

'Why legacy auto died'

WHY

SaveVidBot

WHY ……..

Happy to see ToyotaMotorCorp accelerating their own downfall.

But why?

Just like the close door elevator button

🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮 money, time, energy and effort wasted for nothing

I hope you guys all know that this project is for car enthusiasts people... If you say it's useless then I guess you can say the same to all of the sport cars out in the wild there. There's no point in going fast when you can only go at like 120KM/h at most (except at autobahn)

No.

🤣🤦‍♂️

This is a joke right

Even though it's completely artificial, this is better than nothing in the inevitable future where almost every new car would be an EV and automatic transmission. This, at least, would let the future generation to continue to learn the manual.

So many more things to break 💸💰

Thats the most stupid thing ever

First add synthetic engine sound, now manual transmission. Soon they'll learn how to put gasoline in them and we'll have the perfect electric car.

And the award for stupidest idea of the year goes to...

Why is this necessary? My Model Y does just fine going from stop to ludicrous.

If there’s no engine noise, then it’s pointless. They should just install an arcade joystick from the game 720.

So it is similar to my 2001 Honda Prelude with a tiptronic/shiftronic automatic transmission?

This is crazy for an EV unless they have figured out a way to just double or triple or quadruple the power using gears. The whole fundamentals of electric motors is turned upside down with this.

As dumb as …. This

What’s wrong with synthetic fuel? Gas stations are ready….

Nah

In 15 years Toyota won't exist. Look at their debt

No

troublesome

This is dumb as hell and unnecessary. Toyota/Lexus have no idea what they’re doing with EVs

Love driving a manual and love the 100% torque available at zero rpm in electrics. But this marriage makes no sense imo. Maybe it's one of those don't knock it until you've tried it kinda deals?

Isn’t Dodge trying to do this with the Electric Challenger and chargers? But what does the transmission even do in these cars 🤨

What a bunch of strokers

Toyota seem so lost... lets add some coconut shells to your model-T so you can clap them together as you drive around, drop a shit out the back at traffic lights

Same energy as the blackberry Storm 2 with SurePress display 😂🤣

mrbenzachariah

How about develop a better battery and DC motor instead? Heck, how about developing a proper UI?

Japanese are already bankrupt

Why?!?!

Y tho

As the old saying goes:”Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should”.

wasn't Audi already doing that?

Why though?!! 🤷🤣

Why?!

No, it isn’t.

Must be April 1st.

What's the point, senseless Toyota need to get there act together.

For fucks sake 🤦

This is a joke right?

They need to work on that 90’s garage plastic interior before anything

So they didn't make them for their big V8's. And now they do this? For fucks sake.

Why?

Sometimes, the motor industry seems invent highly complex and wallet-destroying solutions to problems that don’t exist.

But if there’s no transmission, then what’s the point?

The sound alone is rubbish

Can they fit a dipstick and air filter too?

Possiblyyy... (Technical assessment)
