The electricity bill was more than six times her usual cost

Sonia Micallef of the Bare Food Company says she receives an electricity bill from Airtricity every two months, which normally amounts to about €1,200.Speaking to RSVP Live, Sonia said: “Our initial bill was €7759, but after we contacted them to see if that was correct they recalculated it to €7,400 going by our latest metre readings - which obviously isn’t much better.

“This is going to keep happening to people because businesses are coming out of contract with their energy suppliers and they are not being renewed because the suppliers know what is about to happen. I know loads of businesses that are coming out of contract soon and they are terrified”. Sonia said she and her staff have had to make a number of changes in a bid to cut down on their costs.

“We’re in an old building with narrow doors and with buggies coming in you have to open both doors, when it’s busy it’s just another thing to constantly be on the lookout for. And it’s been quite a mild winter so far, we haven’t even hit the coldest time”.
