Within the 2023 Kia Sportage trio, the plug-in hybrid is the most powerful and efficient choice.

Kia was wise to add the hybrids, which are the more powerful SUVs. The non-hybrid with its 2.5-liter I-4 is noisy and weak, with 187 hp and 178 lb-ft of torque. The hybrids use a much quieter, turbocharged 1.6-liter gas engine and add motors,to 227 hp and 258 lb-ft. The most powerful of the bunch has a cord: The plug-in hybrid boosts that horsepower to 261. Power flows from the electric motor and gas engine through a six-speed automatic transmission to standard all-wheel drive.

Combine that with efficiency: although its 34 miles of range on pure EV power isn't world class, the Sportage PHEV's estimated 430 miles of total range with gasoline and electricity is solid for its segment. We had one quibble, though, and that was with the dual-purpose unit for HVAC and infotainment controls. Too much attention away from the road is required to ensure you're in the right view, and it's easy to turn down the temperature when you're trying to change the radio station. But the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and infotainment display tilted toward the driver are excellent, modern, and fresh looking.

How about a hwy mileage rating? Stop the BS and test these EVs at hwy speeds.
