NSW Treasurer Matt Kean will use an energy ministers meeting on Friday to demand the federal government provides financial relief to households as they face soaring electricity bills, warning that families and businesses were ignored in this week’s budget.but delivered no support in Tuesday’s budget.

However, federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers said the “worst thing that we could do is contribute to even higher inflation”. Chalmers warned that cost-of-living relief should not be “counter-productive”.Kean said he was “prepared to be a nuisance” at Friday’s meeting of energy ministers and will insist that federal Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen does more to help with increasing bills.

“We can’t wait until the next budget in May for cost-of-living messages because clearly Labor has already put up the white flag when it comes to helping with power bills.”NSW officials have been briefed that power bills in the state will rise by 40 per cent over the next two year as a direct result of the ongoing war in Ukraine. Nationally, the rise will be about 50 per cent.Federal Labor made an election commitment to reduce electricity bills by $275 by 2025.

Kean said the federal budget delivered $7.5 billion in cost-of-living relief across the country, while the 2022-23 NSW budget set aside $7.2 billion for NSW.NSW provided funding in its June budget for 30,000 households to access 10 years of upfront payments, at a cost of $128 million, to put towards a solar system or new, more efficient white goods in a bid to cut energy bills as power prices soar.
