There were about 4,400 electric vehicles registered in Alabama in 2021, an increase of about four-fold since 2017. In addition, there were about 3,100 plug-in hybrid vehicles registered in the state.

Alabama is spending taxpayer dollars to support the electric vehicle industry but do not expect the state to establish a plan to phase out gas-powered engines like California has announced.

Unlike California, Ivey believes that government support rather than more government control is the answer “plain and simple,” Maiola said.to phase out gas-powered vehicles to reduce pollution that contributes to climate change. In 2026, zero-emission or plug-in hybrid electric vehicles will have to make up at least 35 percent of new vehicle sales. That target rises annually to reach 100 percent in 2035. The rules follow an executive order by Gov. Gavin Newsom.

Because of that and other concerns, the transition to electric vehicles will likely be slower than indicated by the regulations planned in California, Balasubramanian said. Larry Brown, chief of the planning branch of the Air Division at the Alabama Department of Environmental Management, said no regulations similar to California’s are in the works. That said, public, private, and collaborative efforts to promote the electric vehicle industry and the network of public charging options are on the rise in Alabama. Automakers are offering more choices for consumers.

“The objective is to have an electric vehicle fast-charging setup no more than 50 miles apart, and no more than one mile off of an interstate,” Bentley said. “So that anybody at any time can travel with a warm sense of security across the state of Alabama whether inter- or intrastate.

In addition to the federal grant program, Alabama established a state grant program in 2020. Priorities for the state grants include rural and underserved areas not eligible for the NEVI grants, as well as low- to moderate-income areas and those with high ratios of multi-family dwellings like apartment complexes. ADECA awarded 18 grants in June 2021 totaling $4.2 million. ADECA is reviewing 126 applications for a second round of grants that will total $2 million.
