“False social reality” obscures widespread U.S. support for climate protection measures

A multibillion-dollar slate of moderate climate-mitigation measures in the Biden administration’s Inflation Reduction Act has been met so far with general public approval. But a broader reaction to the historic federal action underlies the discourse: What took you so long?

The consequences of this misperception are significant, says Boston College psychologist Gregg Sparkman, lead author of the new study, which was published in Nature Communications. Such a false impression can lead to a cycle of collective self-silencing on the topic of climate change and to decisions not to take any action to call for climate mitigation policies.

Past research on shared misperceptions of others has used the phrase “pluralistic ignorance” to refer to a plurality of people being wrong about some social perception. Two things led us to choose stronger language here. One was that the magnitude of misperception was such that people completely invert majority to minority, from supermajority to just 30 or 40 percent. The underestimation is that large as to invert reality, in that sense. And then the other was that it was just so ubiquitous.

Is the gap between the perceptions of congresspeople and their staffers and constituents a more crucial gap than the one between fellow constituents?

How do we protect the climate from doing what it’s been doing for 5 billion years?

Solution: brainwash the population with changes in language, such as the seasons will be named climate change and heavy on guilt (it is our fault). Good luck woke people!

Escuta a terra tremer, pela nossa liberdade. Um só povo.

Support unfortunately does not translate into anything tangible like support for remediation that costs $ or basically any lifestyle changes

Real climate protection activity in the US is understanding that the south west has been drying up since records have been taken. Stopping the introduction of foreign species and reimplementing the natural varieties of garden species and insects.

I remember the days when this magazine actually reported on real science. I miss those days...

Blah..blah

Popularity doesn't affect facts. Facts remain facts.

The two-party system has representatives of huge numbers voting against it when their constituents actually want it. Campaign finance reform is lacking, and therefore we have corruption.

Like flying all around rhe world to lecture people and taxng them more right?

How are you going to “protect” the climate from doing what it’s been doing for 5 billion years?

Feelings, nothing more than feelings.

Positive action and positive results get no coverage. Thus, the general population has no idea what is really going on…

If you told and showed people what the actual projected affect on global warming would be by this hundred billion dollar plan and then polled them, you’d find different results. Your polling them based on feel good statements.

I am all for protecting the climate’s ability to keep doing what it’s been doing for 5 billion years: change.

KendraWrites The false, fabricated social reality of the near-total lack of specific climate coverage on national news, due to fossil fuel companies being major advertisers. Climate change is the biggest story in the world and is never, ever covered that way in the U.S. media.

That's because most people have decided to worship Mother earth and have turned their backs on Father God. They are worshipping the created rather than the Creator. Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain...

Of course, many people want better public transport, better quality of goods, ability to repair stuff, better insulation of buildings, clean and cheaper energy, bike infrastructure, better train transport, shorter work week - all of these and more are climate change actions!

How do you propose to ”protect” the climate from doing what it’s been doing for 5 billion years?

Well the boomers with all the wealth they accumulated 100x easier than anyone after them ever will, refuse to use that money on ANY climate improvement. So your article is irrelevant
