Energy and effort. That was Wings coach Vickie Johnson’s refrain in the buildup to Game 2 against the Sun. In the time right after Thursday’s 93-68 loss up...

until minutes before Sunday’s tip, Johnson returned to the “Two E’s” like a preacher relaying their favorite parable. Energy and effort, she explained again and again, will be the key to her team extending the first round series to a winner-take-all Game 3.

“It was a team effort,” Johnson said postgame. “We did it as a team; we won as a team; and we got to continue on that rhythm as a team.” In Game 1, McCowan started on Alyssa Thomas while Kayla Thornton was on Jonquel Jones. The plan didn’t work as Thomas and Jones took advantage of the mismatches those matchups provided.

The decision paid dividends immediately. Dallas scored the first seven points of the game and never looked back. The Wings play at a quicker pace with Harrison on the court and that tempo caught the Sun a little off guard. “B. Jones came in, she came in,” Johnson said. “That was the real focus behind everything, the changing of the lineup and stuff. She would have to match B Jones. She’s the person that can do it and they went head to head the whole night.”
