The Energy Bills Support Scheme is being administered by energy suppliers

British Gas has written to its customers with more details for how the cost of living energy payments will be made. Payments will start in October as part of a cost of living package of measures announced earlier this year by the Government.

and will see households will see a discount of £66 applied to their energy bills in October and November, rising to £67 each month from December through to March 2023. The Government confirmed that households would to start receiving £400 off their energy bills from October, with the discount made in 6 instalments to help families throughout the winter period. The scheme will provide energy bill discounts to 29 million households across Great Britain.

"If your Direct Debit is less than £67 a month, say £50 for example, £50 will be refunded to your bank account and the remaining £17 will be applied as credit to your energy account." It said that cash/cheque customers will have the discount applied to their energy account balance each month. British Gas added that there is no need to apply for the scheme and the money will not need to be repaid. It will also not affect customers' credit ratings in any way.
