Autumn energy bill rise inevitable, says Ofgem boss

Householders should expect a further rise in energy bills in England, Wales and Scotland in October, the boss of energy regulator Ofgem has said. Not being able to afford energy bills was a matter of life and death for some people, he said.

Analysts Cornwall Insight predicted that a typical domestic energy bill will go up by £600 a year in October. In a speech in Glasgow"The market remains highly volatile and as a result we do expect further price increases later this year," he said."I talk to customers on a regular basis, and I know how tough rising energy prices are for many households and businesses," he said.

"What was shocking was to learn that she feels more comfortable in hospital where she can eat and be warm than at home," he said. A widely-predicted increase in October comes on top of a £700 typical rise in annual domestic gas and electricity bills, which took effect in April when the price cap was last raised. Consumers in Northern Ireland - not covered by the price cap - have already seen significant increases in bills.Mr Brearley reiterated a commitment to updating the price cap, putting suppliers under greater scrutiny and helping move the UK away from a reliance on gas.

Slap the cost on the HP restaurant close the MP's bank account for benefits & expenses in all forms see how they can manage doing their jobs including their 2nd homes.

They won't be happy until they bleed us dry 😠

Then surely ofgem is not fit for purpose as their job is to protect and safeguard customers, not to protect energy company profits. Ofgem

Until the Climate Change Act 2008 is repealed the government will drag its feet on new gas and oil projects. The sooner this act is repealed the quicker we will have cheaper energy.

Only here for the “bUt ThEy WiLl hAVe aN iPHonE aND sKY” brigade

Bloody expensive renewable energy....

Maybe it's time us peasants revolted!!

Time for civil disobedience

And we pay for this how? My salary hasnt increased due to rise in fuel prices. How much more can people give up?

Well it's not exactly inevitable is it. ofgem could NOT raise the cap and force the energy providers to eat into their profits and still make a shed ton of money. I don't know how they say they sell energy at a loss but still make £Bs in profit.

Greed. Wholesale prices have dropped, profits are super high. The only reasonable response is a 5% immediate price cut! GasPrice

Greed greed greed greed greed.

That's it then, I'm going to move to Spain 🌞🌞🌞

It's fine, we just won't eat.

If it brings any joy to anyone, I signed a 2 year fixed deal in August 2021 and I am fully hammering the utilities with a view to leave my metres well ahead by the time it ends

All those energy bosses gotta squeeze the poor for some Christmas cash...

BBCScotlandNews Always up; wholesale prices coming down! This is not a consumers watchdog but a suppliers monopoly managing system!

More fleecing.

Not again. So sick of this now. Are they still making huge profits & bonuses?

we need a windfall tax on the energy companies
