Houston oil field service company Baker Hughes recently completed a successful test of its NovaLT12 turbine in Florence, Italy. The hybrid turbine can use both natural gas and hydrogen as fuel sources.Houston-based Baker Hughes will supply Greece with turbines capable of running on both hydrogen and gas, furthering the oil field service giant’s mission to transform itself into an energy technology company.

Baker Hughes said Thursday it will provide three compression trains and turbines that can process and transport a blend of gas and hydrogen to the Greek Natural Gas Transmission System. The equipment is expected to come online in 2024. The contract comes as Baker Hughes works to expand its reach into technology that serves the energy transition, with a particular focus on turbomachinery equipment to compress, transport and make use of hydrogen.

The deal in Greece follows one in Italy in 2020, when Baker Hughes worked with energy infrastructure network provider Snam to introduce a gas turbine for transporting hydrogen-gas blends within its pipeline network in Italy — the first time a hybrid turbine was integrated into a gas system. “Technology is a critical enabler of the energy transition, and our wide range of climate technology solutions helps customers to decarbonize their operations,” said Rod Christie, the company’s executive vice president of turbomachinery and process solutions. “This project will advance the understanding of what’s capable in a hydrogen economy and supports Europe’s energy transition goals.”
