Taoiseach Micheál Martin has said the Government cannot react on a weekly basis to rising energy costs and inflation

The Government cannot react on a weekly basis to rising energy costs and inflation, the Taoiseach has said.

He said this could include expanding eligibility to the fuel allowance and taking further measures through social protection to help families with children. "One very clear policy shift that is emerging from this crisis is the need to accelerate renewable energy," he said.Mr Martin said Ireland is not as dependent on Russian gas and oil as other countries, but nonetheless will have to adapt.

Meanwhile, the head of Social Justice and Policy with St Vincent de Paul has urged the Government to act now and put supports in place for low-income households, ahead of increased energy costs next winter. She said next winter could be particularly challenging for households and the Government must act now.

"We also want to see the Government commit to benchmarking social welfare rates against the cost of a minimum standard of living so that people have enough income to meet the cost of living."

The Minister for dear Electricity has banned new gas wells in Ireland and now whinges at gas prices.

They can freeze Russian assets at the drop of a hat. Take in 200000 refugees with nowhere to put them. They sell state assets to private corporations. they create inflation by allowing currency debasement but they can't cap energy costs.... fucking liars

Thats exactly their job

Could allow a LNG terminal to be built so we could import natural gas...Lift the ban on fracking... Lift the ban on gas exploration in Irish waters... Not shut down Moneypoint coal and Tarbert oil stations as planned..

They react very quickly to protect their own salaries and pensions and those of the Civil service.

So while energy companies make massive profits off us, there's nothing we can do. Why are these companies not made enter fixed price contracts, like the gov construction contracts?

TodayCB There's no way Claire would read out my text! She allows Mehole Martin waffle, Bullshlt & not answer questions! Why can governments across Europe ease the cost of living burden on their people without asking the EU but not Irish government? Change of govt & media ASAP!

What about the increase to the standing charges ? Why are they going up , I can understand the unit cost, and why is the so called energy regulator not asking that question.
