South Africa’s minister of electricity and energy, Kgosientesho Ramokgopa, said his department will be “ultra-aggressive” in rolling out renewable energy generation and will address concerns about electricity prices., he highlighted several issues he plans to address, including the unaffordability of some municipal energy tariffs and green energy.
He noted that South Africa would maintain its “spine” of energy generation, including coal, hydro, and nuclear power. The minister also wanted to address the country’s electricity pricing problem. President Cyril Ramaphosa announced his government of national unity cabinet on Sunday, 30 June 2024, making a slew of changes to the National Executive.
The National Energy Regulator of South Africa recently approved electricity tariff hikes for various municipal and private power providers nationwide.were given the green light to hike their electricity tariffs. They took effect on 1 July 2024.
