In the 1990s and 2000s, power failures were common in the country and typically caused by power plants unable to keep up with demand. In cities, blackouts could last 6 to 8 hours. In rural areas, life would stall at sunset, with many regions lacking access almost entirely. While Bangladesh had the right idea — sufficient electricity generation for all — the nation took an inflexible, Industrial Age approach: large, centralized power plants powered by fossil fuels—most of which is imported.
