Pollution from power plants, some of the highest in the nation, is a major contributor to not only smog but also climate change.

Wednesday’s ruling by the Commonwealth Court to disallow Pennsylvania to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative violates the constitution that states citizens have a right to clean air, among other things.

Even Gov. Josh Shapiro has raised concerns about RGGI regarding jobs and power costs. Ironically, the impacts of climate change that RGGI can help mitigate – severe weather, flooding, drought, and disease – are significantly more costly. RGGI is the best means of curtailing greenhouse gas emissions now, since there is no other plan in place to cut them fast enough to avert the worst impacts of climate change.

The court stated that any plan to impose a “tax” on power plants must be enacted through the legislature. Unfortunately, this is unlikely: “pro-life” Republicans continue to fight action against climate change that is already killing millions, born and unborn, primarily in poorer nations that have contributed least to thelieu of any policy to reduce emissions, it is therefore up to each of us to help mitigate climate change by reducing our consumption of electricity, natural gas, and gasoline.

If our legislators and judges can’t serve the people, I guess the people must take care of ourselves – and the planet. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
