Claire Coutinho claims slowing down net zero commitments will avoid public backlash seen in Europe

The Government’s recent pivot away from its previous net zero commitments is being cast as a move against those on the extremities of the climate debate, to ensure the UK “won’t see some of the revolts that we’ve seen in the rest of Europe”.

Net zero tsar and former minister Chris Skidmore, who also chairs the all-party parliamentary group on environment, said the Government’s decision was “the antithesis of climate leadership”.
