Electric Picnic Festival Director Melvin Benn confirmed single-use disposable vapes are banned at the festival this year - but said it will be impossible to stop people sneaking them in.
Speaking ahead of the event this week, Festival Republic boss Benn, who runs the annual event, admits it will be difficult to police it, but said he is hoping the ban will discourage the resale inside the grounds. “So that none getting in but our position at Electric Picnic is that we won’t retail them. We think they’re difficult to recycle not impossible to recycle but they’re difficult to recycle and we think unfortunately most people put them in general waste stream as opposed to a particular recycling stream and that does make it very difficult.
Melvin explained the decision to delay the announcement was not about building suspense, but to respect the Irish band in a time of heartache after the death of their guitarist and founding member Mark Sheehan, who sadly passed away aged 46 in April. The 2024 festival, which usually takes place the first weekend in September, will take place on 16th – 18th August next year.
Meanwhile, with weekend tickets for the festival costing €280 amid a cost of living crisis, Melvin said he is still confident the weekend is worth the price.
