A measure promoting the use of waste-to-energy technologies, in a bid to ease the environmental burden of unmanaged solid waste while securing more energy sources, has advanced in the Senate Tuesday after it was reported out for plenary approval.
In the proposed measure, WTE would be part of the Philippine Energy Plan, marking a significant shift toward a more sustainable and diversified energy portfolio. In the Philippines, there are currently 13 WTE plants, only six of which are operational. “We have to act swiftly before the consequences become too unbearable. Let us leave [the next generation] with a world protected from the threats of environmental damage and degradation through our collective efforts and shared advocacies,” Revilla added.
However, the authors said, solid waste disposal system cannot handle the “ continuously increasing amount of household and domestic wastes that we produce.”
