More than seven million households across the country are set to be hit by colossal increases to their electricity bills, expected to lead to 'widespread shock' with hikes amounting as high as $800.

, with experts warning matters are only going to get worse.

Some of the nation’s biggest electricity providers are charging more than $800 a year following the latest hike with SA bearing the brunt of the crisis. South Australians are projected to see a colossal increase to residential power bills of between 22 to 63 per cent this year, in what is already one of the most expensive regions in the world for energy rates.

Queensland was also hit hard with annual price estimates rising by eight to 41 per cent – a colossal addition of up to $548, while in Victoria, rates were bumped by 22 to 31 per cent.
