has backed Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa’s proposal to extend the service of old coal-fired power stations due to be decommissioned in line with the country’s Integrated Resource Plan 2019 to deal with the current power crisis.
He added: “But once we’re over this immediate crisis, we think opportunities will arise to accelerate the decommissioning and to almost opportunistically pull these plants off as we build up the generation capacity. We argue for seizing those opportunities as they arise and as the funding becomes available.”
The JET-IP is a five-year plan focused on electricity, electric vehicles and green hydrogen power and not a plan for the entire energy sector. Funders of the plan, the IPG, include Germany, France, the UK, the EU and the US who’ve collectively provided $8.5 billion through concessional loans, loans and a small portion that’s grant money. The majority of this money is meant to go towards decommissioning old coal-fired power stations.
“At this point, money has not flowed to particular until such time that we’ve completed and finalised an implementation plan that everyone is happy with, including the PCC and the IPG.” “We’re suggesting that government should urgently take a full capacity assessment put in place strong government and accountability measures and focus on barriers to implementation. There are going to be a number of barriers and that impacts on timeframes.” He added that the allocated fiver-year period for the plan would not suffice.
