Many companies are looking to make self-driving trucks. Einride feels they are the best path to electric trucks, and that's the best way to reduce emissions.

Diesel trucks are a bane on the planet. A huge fraction of transportation pollution comes from them, and most of the deadly particulates from transportation are from diesel vehicles. If you are going to electrify anything to reduce emissions, trucks would be your first target. They would, but the world is doing cars first because cars are small enough to easily electrify. To make an electric truck with a 500 mile range requires a massive battery.

The big win for electric, though, is that the remote driver isn’t needed at all while the truck is charging. They can be off immediately driving another truck. In some cases, a truck can stop and switch tractors and get on the road immediately, possibly with the same remote driver, while the tractor recharges more slowly. While that means downtime for the tractor the charging is a lot cheaper and easier on the battery.

Remote truck driving is a much less grueling job than going on the road. You sleep at home every night, with your family. The hours can be normal, though there can be shift work. It’s effectively a desk job. It loses many of the factors that create the massive turnaround in the truck driving occupation — sometimes more than 100% per year.
