VANCOUVER — The British Columbia government says it’s rolling out a new framework for approving oil and gas projects that will ensure the province meets its emissions targets in the coming decades.

Premier David Eby said the new framework will require new liquefied natural gas facilities to have a “credible plan” for net-zero emissions by 2030, and there will be an emissions cap on the industry.

The government will also launch a task force within B.C. Hydro to speed up the electrification of the provincial economy with a focus on renewable energy. A government statement says the new framework “builds off” the environmental assessment certificate granted to the Cedar LNG facility announced Tuesday, which it declared will be one of the lowest-emitting liquefied natural gas facilities in the world.

“But the scale of the climate crisis and the tremendous opportunities before us mean we must act with more urgency than ever before.”

We need a new provincial government. It's time to get rid of the BCNDP.

Forcing BC’s oil and gas producers to subsidize uneconomical “green” technologies simply makes energy cost more and becomes less reliable. What’s worse, it has virtually no effect on overall emissions as production migrayes to meet rising global demand. bcpoli

British Columbia announces new energy 'framework' on heels of LNG facility approvalVANCOUVER — The British Columbia government says it’s rolling out a new framework for approving oil and gas projects that will ensure the province meets its… “Clean” energy? 87 hydroelectric dams mangling the natural flow of water in virtually every watershed in BC, including rivers that flow into the US, and the rest of Canada? Releasing heavy metals and other chemicals? “Clean” must have a pretty narrow definition.

British Columbia announces new energy 'framework' on heels of LNG facility approval - BNN BloombergThe British Columbia government says it's rolling out a new framework for approving oil and gas projects that will ensure the province meets its emissions targets in the coming decades. The “fast track” for preferred energy projects will shorten which part of the process? Environmental reviews? Public engagement? Indigenous consultation? Economic sustainability? Calling it fast doesn’t make it fast. They had dozens of projects proposed and only one built in over a decade because the regulatory process was ineffective and lacked clout (ie. Special interest groups leveraged opposition for money). Will this new one be better?
