A poll found 84 per cent of Canadians don\u0027t know about the Liberal plan to transition workers out of the energy sector to new jobs

Albertans, in fact, are far more likely to have heard of the just transition than their compatriots in other provinces. It makes sense, given that this is the province that’s likely to be most affected by any overhaul of the petroleum industry. Alberta also recently experienced an attempted transition for workers away from the coal sector.

“It’ll be interesting because … this has sort of echoes of what they went through in the ’90s when they really had to repurpose themselves and go through a dramatic shake-up of the fishery sector,” Enns said. The poll also takes the additional step of informing people what the plan is, explaining that the “stated goal is to prepare the Canadian workforce to participate in a low-carbon economy.” When presented with this information, a majority of Canadians believe it is the right approach for Canada, while 27 per cent disagree.Article content

But there’s considerable skepticism about whether the federal government is actually capable of guiding this transition. Younger Canadians are more likely than older Canadians to think the government will pull it off: 33 per cent of those 18 to 34 are confident in its execution, and 34 per cent of those aged 35 to 54 feel the same. People aged 55 and over have the lowest belief in its success, at 24 per cent.

The poll also looks at a number of other issues that are intertwined with discussions of the just transition plan. For example, 57 per cent of Canadians worry about the impact of lost tax revenue to governments should the economy transition away from natural resources. And 40 per cent believe that the plan to transition away from fossil fuels will make Canada less competitive in the global economy.
