A war of words has erupted between Jim Chalmers and Matt Kean over the timing of energy bill relief the Commonwealth promised in return for support of coal price caps.

NSW in December last year agreed to the Albanese Government's request for a price cap on coal of $125 per tonne in a bid to ease soaring costs.targeted support for select households and small businessesBut Mr Kean on Friday said that financial relief has not yet been forthcoming because Mr Chalmers was waiting until the May federal budget to deliver a"PR stunt".

"Jim Chalmers wants people to wait for his May budget just so he's got a PR stunt. The reality is electricity bills are increasing now." "Minister Bowen promised me, Prime Minister Albanese promised the Premier that those energy bill rebates would come into place once we delivered the coal caps," Mr Kean said.

Mr Chalmers said he has repeatedly made it clear the bill relief would not take effect until about mid-2023. "We've responded to issues raised by the states and territories about needing to take the time to sort out the implementation issues to make sure that we get all of that sorted so that we can get relief into people's hands as soon as possible."
