The widespread adoption of colder, bluer LEDs may not be worth the energy it saves if it causes so much disruption to the environment and our own lives.

Studying the spectral composition of the continent's lighting usingcaptured from the International Space Station, the researchers found that the more energy efficient and higher visibility LED lights are rapidly replacing the old school sodium lights for outdoor use in Europe, bringing with them some unintended but drastic consequences.

Indeed, blue light is widely suspected to suppress the body’s production of melatonin. And with it spilling all across the landscape, it’s not hard to imagine why that may have adverse effects for humans as well as animals, or in the study’s words, "substantial biological impacts."

Please, for the love of all things holy, put the bad news in the headline.

This is not an inherent problem of LEDs. They can be manufactured to emit any color of light. I have ones that are 2200K, and the light is very warm, like old Edison incandescents.

conways_law Red it and the article is just awfully bad. It is full of assumptions and no real factual information.I suspect it is just another sales strategy from one technology land to try undermine the other.Mixing facts and non facts and present it as fact creates BS and that is dangerous
