Opinion: A simple change to local bylaws can curb greenhouse gas emissions from buildings

The No. 1 source of climate pollution from cities is buildings, and a simple change to municipal bylaws can encourage or, in some cases, even require developers to construct new buildings powered by clean electricity rather than fracked gas. This move will curb greenhouse gas emissions and make it easier to install electric heat pumps that both heat and cool our homes and businesses — making our communities safer during future extreme heat.

Many communities agree. Over the past year, leading municipalities across Metro Vancouver and beyond have started passing policies to provide incentives for low carbon construction. By doing so, they’re joining the growing SAFE Cities movement to stop fossil fuel expansion and phase out fossil fuels through local government action. But as B.C.

Another 250k added in building cost

It is very risky to put all eggs in one basket. There has to be a diversified pathway to clean energy. Electricity, renewable gas (which captures methane), hydrogen, solar, etc. There is simply not enough electricity generation to support this big push and not all is clean.

Wrong. China is building a record number of coal plants. That will eclipse whatever bylaws we create. Selling our oil and gas with carbon capture technology would help, though. But Trudeau won't allow it.
