Western Australia's government calls time on its involvement in coal power, declaring the state will exit the market before 2030 and plough billions of dollars into renewable energy and storage.

Western Australia's government has called time on its involvement in coal power, declaring the state will exit the market before 2030 and plough billions of dollars into renewable energy and storage.

In a landmark announcement this afternoon, Premier Mark McGowan and Energy Minister Bill Johnston revealed state-owned power provider Synergy would shut its remaining coal-fired plants by 2029. About 1,200 staff from Collie and the surrounding areas will be affected by the decision, although the government, industry and unions are aiming to retrain or re-employ workers as part of a "just transition" program.

Synergy currently owns and runs two coal power stations, the 854MW Muja plant and the 340MW Collie asset, both of which are near Collie about 200km south of Perth. The government had already announced its planned closure of dates of October this year and 2024 for some older units at Muja.

About time, my wife was devastated to see the destruction caused by these mines

It's amusing watching the Chicken Little's coming out of the wood work to bemoan *checks notes* the pending closure of a clapped out 63 year old power plant in a market in which coal isn't even the dominant power source and which has easy, reserved access to natural gas.

The Govt is being deceitful. WA cannot and will not be a manufacturing centre. Highest wages in the world, biggest distance to markets, smallest domestic demand and now unreliable power. It ain’t happening, and anyone who says it will is either lying or incompetently stupid.

WA should focus on the third world living conditions of a huge number of indigenous Australians in that state. Absolutely appalling that mark mcgowan can sleep at night knowing how some indigenous Aussies live in WA. Makes me sick to my stomach.

Net zero is suicide

EnviroVic Here, here, about time. It should have happened years ago. coal

There it is again, the reason prices have skyrocketed over 10 years. They are just closing down as they know it's over, no one will buy them even though on paper they're worth $B. So they're gouging while they can. Federalize energy, Supply at cost, and watch the economy boom

Busson sounds like a sellout. How can he be happy when there’s nothing like for like even in planned stages for disposed workers. Pathetic.

These are the perpetrators pushing this power, health,Food climate crap

Twiggy might have the answer.

How’s the irony…ABC today advises Australians in areas in NSW and QLD about power outages….go figure!

Another act of stupidity by a person in government, hiding behind 'privacy', having no knowledge of how renewables work/don't work, and making a decision that will cause network failures and poverty for the average punter, for years to come.

This is a crime.

I feel sorry for the people who'll be needing reliable life support in the near and distant future.
