Set prices for wholesale power have now been imposed in all four main regions in the National Electricity Market as the energy crunch worsens and shortages loom.

after prices broke through a set threshold late Monday in a further escalation of the nation’s energy crisis that could see blackouts later on Tuesday.

“AEMO is working pretty hard with the generators to ensure we can avoid the load-shedding and based on their advice I’m pretty confident we can,” Mr Bowen told Radio National on Tuesday,Mr Bowen said many generators were waiting to be instructed by AEMO before they bid into the market and then would be compensated. The minister said coal-fired power was under enormous strain at the moment. “We have had an ill-managed transition, and we are paying the price for that now,” he said.

“As a consequence, some generators revised their market availability in New South Wales and Queensland for today,” AEMO said in a statement on Tuesday. A similar squeeze was warned of on Monday but forced blackouts were averted after AEMO directed plants to operate and negotiated for emergency reserves.
