OPINION: Albanese doesn’t have the political capital to burn that Howard did in 1998. A good, solid first-term agenda for Labor would be to deliver on its commitments, fix the budget and sort out climate change.

For all the talk of Anthony Albanese’s “small-target” strategy, for all his purported lack of policy ambition, not only did he get there in the end, but he got there without the sky-high expectations and insurmountable to-do list that quickly undid a couple of his predecessors as Labor prime minister, Gough Whitlam and Kevin Rudd.

New Prime Minister Anthony Albanese with, from left, Treasurer Jim Chalmers, Foreign Affairs Minister Penny Wong, Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles, and Finance Minister Katy Gallagher. The risk for Labor on taking government is never doing too little, but rather doing too much. After 15 years of political dysfunction, the federal budget is a shambles. It’s not so much the hundreds of billions in debt racked up during the pandemic, but rather the structural deficits as far as the eye can see because a succession of governments of both stripes have promised a whole lot of new spending without the taxes necessary to pay for it.

Labor has a solid climate plan centred on the safeguard mechanism, but there are still lots of unanswered questions. So, it needs to figure out exactly what it wants that plan to achieve. Labor also needs to come up with something meaningful on vehicle emissions, which every expert agrees means matching the vehicle emissions standards used overseas so our electric vehicle fleet keeps up with the global frontier.

Don’t fix the budget - it will mean more taxes

Fix the budget and climate change in 3 years? Sure.

thats not going to happen

Well he’s not going to fix the budget and climate change so he’s fkd then

What are the mean girls doing there...

Possibly but why should anyone listen to AFR which argued he shouldn’t be elected?

Will interesting to see how Labour is going to deliver those promises made before the election, specifically climate change.

Anyone take this rag seriously?

Here you go again FR with your boring, repetitious, ignorant, ill-informed right- wing journalism that continues to influence righties and holds this country back. You just have to look at your financial counsel and editorial to know you comment on political affairs are poor

‘Sort out climate change’ in the first term. 😂 No worries.

Absolutely fantastic I can say Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.

Fix the budget? Yeh, nah. Not falling for that one. The Liberals can fix their budget mess next time they are in Government. We are going to spend big (not as big as the Liberals of course).

who there is taking dictation from Peter Costello

How’s phil coping?

Nothing too lofty then

The LNP already committed Australia to net zero by 2050. What else is there?

; f🖕ck that. tax your f^cken ar$e$ off.

A correct or 'fixed' budget is one that appropriately supports the economy, invests in worthwhile projects, delivers valuable services, and has well thought out taxes. It may be in surplus, balance or deficit.
