The dorsal fin of a humpback whale is seen on the surface of the water in the Uramba Bahia Malaga Natural Park, in the Pacific coast of Colombia, on August 11, 2023.

The technology is called wave devouring propulsion because of how it helps to convert wave energy into a forward thrustTechnology inspired by how whales move through water converts ocean wave energy into a propulsion force that can reduce a ship's fuel consumption. In an effort to reduce the environmental impact of commercial ships, a group of U.K.

It is a magical experience witnessing the smaller animals darting through the water like torpedoes, occasionally leaping above the surface as they gallop through the water. The new U.K. review study looked at more than 100 years of research that used theoretical methods, computational simulations and experimentation with scale-model-sized ships and full-scale prototypes to imitate nature's propulsion system and apply it to ships.

Ordinarily, as a ship heads into waves, the bow pitches up and down, a motion that passengers and crew often find uncomfortable.
