While the world is already amazed at smartphones that shrink in size, a discovery has the potential to disrupt the wireless communication space further. It will help build smartphones that can be as small as a credit card.
According to the researchers, this breakthrough in the phononics sphere could make wireless devices smaller, more powerful, and more energy-efficient.“There are something like 30 filters inside their cell phone whose sole job it is to transform radio waves into sound waves and back,” said Matt Eichenfield, the senior author of the study.
This difference in materials also leads to some signal loss during the translation process, which can affect call quality or data speed. Lithium niobate is a common material already used in smartphone’s filters. It is good at converting electrical signals into sound waves . However, it is not efficient at manipulating them.
